Why CBT?
I like cognitive behavioural therapy because it has broad applicability and is in line with my way of thinking (while naturally not being suitable for everyone). It is constantly evolving and I perceive it as an integrative and living approach.
CBT was originally developed for treating phobias and anxiety, either by working with thoughts or behaviour. Over time it has expanded to include work with the body and emotions, mindfulness techniques, and schema therapy approaches to emotional experience.
What you can expect
At the beginning of therapy we will define your therapeutic goals together. During sessions we talk a lot, try to understand your behaviour, thinking, emotions and bodily reactions, and may practice challenging situations. Through imagery we connect with your inner experience, and relaxation techniques help to reduce anxiety.
You will often take a “home assignment” from therapy to further explore or practise what we have been working on. Over time this creates a coherent system for working with yourself so that by the end of therapy you are able to act as your own therapist and live your life more independently and confidently.
